Ive got a German III test tomorrow, but general consensus on campus is that HASS-D tests dont really count. So really, the only test class Ive got this term is 6.003: Signals and Systems. And, to be honest, I dont even care anymore when those tests are. I think the quintessential MIT story to tell freshmen during orientation is Oh yeah, I cruised through high school without doing any work, then I got to my first 8.01 test, pulled an all-nighter studying for it, realized I didnt know my butt from a scalar product, and got a 42 on it. But then I realized I was on Pass/No Record. And then I went to a party at my frat. Hey, want to come over? Its free lobster night! Well, I didnt exactly cruise through high school, I got a 95 on my first 8.01 test after studying for like one hour, and since then Ive never actually failed a test in an MIT class. That doesnt mean Ive never done poorly on a test, or never left five pages on the same test blank, or that Ive never scored below fifty percent just that those scores have never, well, technically been failing. To me, succeeding at MIT is just a gradual process of lowering your standards until youve learned to be satisfied with mediocrity. And so, in the spirit of exam season, I thought Id give you a term-by-term breakdown of my lowest test scores at MIT. Fall 2003 I was inconsolable after getting a 79 on my second 5.112: Chem for Masochists test. It wasnt even my lowest grade of all time in that pointthat honor fell to an AP US Government test on the legislative branch in which I was asked What is the mace? and I wrote down a popular brand of pepper spray. It wasnt even a Bclass average was 68 and standard deviation was 15. But man, I studied that Schrodinger equation and those funny shaped orbitals and that vibrational degree of freedom, and I was not going to be told that 30% of the people in that classroom knew it better than me! GRRR!! Spring 2004 The first test in 5.12 (thats organic chemistry) is historically all nomenclature, so if you remember like eight simple rules for identifying your primary carbon, youll just be like Oh, thats hexa-para-n-butyl-blah-blee-blah-blee-blah and get a 98 on your first exam. Emboldened by such an experience, I came to the conclusion that I was rocking organic chemistrys face off and ended up studying about two hours for the second exam, not really paying attention to the fact that I was getting all the answers wrong on the practice exams. So I strolled into the exam the next day, sat down with my five sharpened pencils, opened the first page, and then I was all, WHAT-side attack?! I was rewarded for my feeble efforts with a 59, only 2 points below class average, but still a potent motivator for me to do hundreds of pages of practice problems in preparation for the next two examsand this was before I knew the lpr -Pprinter2 -h command to print without a coversheet. Fall 2004 So I took six classes in about four different majors this term and ended up with four exams in the same week, three of them consecutively on Friday, following a 10-page lab report due on Wednesday. I actually started off extraordinarily well out of the gate, with a 196/186 A+++ on my test in 21M.271: Symphony and Concerto. However, I failed to keep up this momentum, spiraling downward into a 98/105 in 5.07, an 80/100 in 5.13 (thats organic chemistry), and a putrescent 54/100 in 18.701, a class which I dropped one day before the final to go Christmas shopping. They told you about P/NR (the term when nothing is real), but nobody ever mentions SOPHOMORE EXPLORATORY AWESOME! Spring 2005 I didnt actually see a test score lower than 54 this term, but about half of my 5.43 (thats organic chemistry) final was basically an elaborate work of fiction set in some fantasy world where some mischievous deity had invented new laws of physics starting at the molecular level. There were people leaving this test after about 1 hour, and I dont think it was humanly possible to finish the test that quickly. Thanks to an 85 on a previous test, though, I still made out with a B in the class overall. Fall 2005 So, as a point of comparisontwo years ago a 79 had left me inconsolable, but by this point a 50.5 on my 10.213: Thermodynamics midterm barely fazed me, especially because it was only one point under class average. The next test had an average of 44 and a standard deviation of 25, which meant that my 63.5 was pretty darn good. It also meant that you could have gotten a zero and still technically passed. Spring 2006 I was stomping a mudhole in 6.002: Circuits, and RLC was like ABC to me. Then we got to the RLC test and I forgot, like, what an imaginary number was, and what a resistor was, and apparently what addition was because half the test was quanititative and I got basically all of that wrong wrong wrong. As I described in an earlier blog entry, the 40 I got on this test was not quite as upsetting as me to the staple that I put through my finger ten seconds after seeing my grade, and neither was traumatic enough to prevent me from falling asleep in recitation. And dont despair, frosh: even with a 40, which was well below class average this time, I still pulled it up on the final and made an A in the class. It really does happen. So there you have it. And If I ever score below 40 percent on a test at MIT, rest assured that you guys will be the first to know. Because Yay! A 33 in 6.003 that I took in 38-101 before UROP! is just MITese for I love being a senior at MIT!

Becoming an Effective Leader After serving in the Navy for 20 years, I can honestly say that being a manager does not make you a leader. For me, there is a big difference. An effective leader is someone who can motivate people to do things that they would not normally do by themselves. Furthermore, what makes a leader great is their ability to bring out the best in people no matter what the situation may be. After watching the movie, 12 Angry Men, I will present to you in this essay how different leadership styles displayed by three prominent jurors were both ethical and unethical. Additionally, I will show how the consequences of these leadership styles affected the other people in the room regarding the guilt or innocence of a young man and conclude with what can be learned about leadership from these very men. To be an effective leader, it must start from within oneself. Hence, to be an ethical leader, one must be an ethical person first. By combining this class to what I already knew about being a leader, it strengthened my values and my conviction of effective leadership, and that is allowing your people to grow and be successful. Leadership is not about my way or the highway, that is a dictatorship. Leadership is about valuing you people and seeking their contributions. In the movie, this was not the case with jurors #3 #10, which demonstrated the most unethical leadership style for that situation, the authoritarian. Although there are times when authoritarian is needed and will work, in a jury deliberation is not one of them. These men had one goal, and that was to impose their beliefs and convictions upon others in the room, especially the jurors who were easily manipulated. These two men allowed their biased views to prevent them from doing their civic duty which leads to their attempt to indoctrinate the other jurors into thinking like them; they refused to listen to reason or consider any reasonable doubt presented by the other jurors. In chapter eight, Bowie wrote about this unethical leadership style and how Burns rejects what #3 and #10 were doing to the followers in the room. Bowie writes, [Burns] rejection of the indoctrination shows that he respects the autonomy of the followers, (Bowie pg.142) whereas #3 #10 do not. When it comes to pe ople in any situation, self-worth and self-respect are vital to ones autonomy and should be respected by other people. In the movie, juror #3 #10 routinely use unethical authoritarian leadership to prevent other jurors from having any capacity to decide for themselves. By doing so, it gives way to Fonda and his ethical leadership style. To be an effective leader, one must influence followers to work towards a common goal regardless if it is a company, a sports team, or a murder trial. In my experience, how this is achieved is through empowerment of your people. By doing so, you create an ethical environment that allows the people to grow both professionally and personally because they feel that they are part of the team. When it comes to human nature, everyone wants to belong and feel important in some way, that is why you praise in public and reprimand in private. When you value the opinions of people, it creates a high degree of respect within the group that brings out the best in people. That is why Henry Fonda was such a great ethical leader. He sat quietly and listened while observing how the others acted and what they said. By sitting quietly, Fonda noticed that only three people were doing most of the talking and how they were trying to persuade the other jurors. In Fondas case, he brought forth a different p erspective, one that was unbiased. In fact, he repeatedly stated that he has no idea if the boy was guilty or innocent, but it was his social responsibility to ask questions to determine that answer. He was not going to allow other individuals to persuade him or his ethical beliefs.Ãâà In fact, when he asked the other jurors, who felt pressured by the authoritarian group what they thought, he was demonstrating effective leadership. By valuing their opinion, he empowered them to open up and provide their perspective, and by doing so, he made them feel important which in turn made them more willing to contribute. For example, Juror #9, Joe Sweeney is the one that provided critical information, the eyeglasses, that no one had ever thought as being relevant or important, turned out to be the key to finding the boy innocent. If it were not for Fondas ethical leadership and belief in autonomy, Juror #9 might not have spoken up like he did. Fonda use of transformational leadership he lped the other men look at the case from a perspective of serving justice by appealing to their higher values. His goal was simple, bring everyone onboard so they could deliberate through participation. By doing so, he explains that the jury should have some form of human dignity and use rational moral decision making to collaborate to determine the boys fate. By doing so, he empowers the weaker jurors to voice their opinion. In regards to the consequences of the two leadership styles, Fondas ethical leadership style inspired others to stand up for what was right and not give in to the pressure of others. For me, the one juror that was most inspired by Fonda was George Voskovec, juror #11. When Voskovec finally had enough, he began to stand up against the authoritarian figures because some were not taking this deliberation serious, telling them that it is our civic duty and social responsibility to listen to all the facts and give a fair verdict, not one based on biased prejudice. Fondas inspiration ignited a flame within Voskovec, and that erupted into an inferno that eventually spread throughout the room and gave the men an ability to perceive ethical truths during a chaotic experience. However, this was not the case for jurors #3, and #10, their unethical authoritarian leadership style and outright bigoted views that were once unchallenged by most of the group were eventually smothered like a cigarette . The once calm and timid jurors that were easy prey for the authoritarian leadership at the beginning of the film could not be pushed around anymore and turned their backs on juror #10 and left him cowering in the corner like a scared little boy. When it comes to this movie and what we can learn about leadership and ethics, it is simply, understanding the leader and follower relationship that exists between these two entities. Henry Fondas character showed us that transformational leadership is an excellent example of combining leadership and ethics because it holds people they lead to a higher standard and expects more from them. By being an ethical leader, you inspire people to do great things even when they do not think they are capable, and in doing so, these subordinates become leaders themselves who learn to share information and ideas. Additionally, this movie shows us that leaders do not have all the answers, such as the case with the glasses. This evidence did not originate from Fonda; it took someone else to bring up the information. What this shows is the more ideas introduced into a situation through group discussion leads to a better decision-making process. For this to happen, it takes an ethical leader to allow other people to provide their perspective. By doing so, people feel empowered and valued. Finally, the movie shows us that to be an ethical leader your intentions must be ethical in nature when you allow your biased views to dictate your actions and beliefs you end up with leaders like juror # 3 and # 10. Nature Essay -- Orangutans Primates Animals Essays
Nature "What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, men would die from great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts, also happens to man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth." - Chief Seattle The love I have for orangutans comes from an early age. Like most little sisters, my older brother ruthlessly teased me. When I was a baby he would make me mimic funny faces and stick my hair up on end. He said I looked like an orangutan. His teasing continued, but instead of getting mad, I became interested. I began taking a look at these creatures and soon discovered that being compared to one wasn't completely wrong. Actually, orangutans have 97% of the same DNA as humans. So maybe my brother's teasing was not that far off, not that I'll mention that fact to him anytime soon! Orangutans are part of the Great Ape group that are the closest animals related to humans. Orangutans are unique in the ape world in that the other three types, gorillas, chimpanzees, and baboons, are all from Africa. Orangutans are the only apes to come from Asia. Another distinction of the orangutan is their hair, which is bright reddish brown instead of light brown or black like the other species. However, probably the biggest difference is that orangutans are the only arboreal apes. This means that they live primarily in the trees, while the other apes move along the forest ground. In fact, they are the largest animals in the world to dwell in trees. Orangutans used to live as far away as Thailand and Cambodia, but due to human encroachment, they are now only found in the wild in two of Indonesia's islands, Sum... ...f destruction humans have caused to this species. This is especially hard to understand when seeing what close connections humans have with them. It does not take a lot of time spent watching these animals to fall in love with them. While sitting and observing the orangutans at the Denver Zoo, I was amazed at the joy they brought to other visitors, adults and children alike. By slightly modifying our behavior and lifestyle, we can make a difference in the lives of these animals so that they can be seen not only behind glass at zoos, but in their rightful homes among the trees. Plastic money is a term that is used predominantly in reference to the hard plastic cards we use every day in place of actual bank notes. They can come in many different forms such as cash cards, credit cards, debit cards, pre-paid cash cards and store cards. Introduction: A slang phrase for credit cards, especially when such cards used to make purchases. The ââ¬Å"plasticâ⬠portion of this term refers to the plastic construction of credit cards, as opposed to paper and metal of currency. The ââ¬Å"moneyâ⬠portion is an erroneous reference to credit cards as a form of money, which they are not. Although credit cards do facilitate transactions, because they are a liability rather than an asset, they are not money and not part of the economyââ¬â¢s money supply. Plastic money is the alternative of cash or the standard ââ¬Ëmoneyââ¬â¢. Plastic money is used to refer to the credit cards, debit cards that we use to make purchases in our everyday life. Plastic money is much more convenient to carry around as you do not have to carry a huge some of money with you. It is also much safer to carry it along or to travel with it as if it is stolen one can consult the bank whose service you are using and get it blocked hence saving your money from getting stolen or even lost. Plastic money or polymer money, made out of plastic, is a new and easier way of paying for goods and services. Plastic money was introduced in the 1950s and is now an essential form of ready money which reduces the risk of handling a huge amount of cash. It includes debit cards, ATMs, smart cards, etc. Nowadays even developing countries like India are encouraging the use of this plastic money more than cash due to these reasons. Cash Cards ââ¬â A card that will allow you to withdraw money directly from your bank via an Authorized Teller Machine (ATM) but it will not allow the holder to purchase anything directly with it. Credit Cards ââ¬â Again this card will permit the card holder to withdraw cash from an ATM, and a credit card will allow the user to purchase goods and services directly, but unlike a Cash Card the money is basically a high interest loan to the card holder, although the card holder can avoid any interest charges by paying the balance off in full each month. Debit Cards ââ¬â This type of card will directly debit money from your bank account, and can directly be used to purchase goods and services. While there is no official credit facility with debit cards per se, as it is linked to the bank account the limit is the limit of what is in the account, for instance if an overdraft facility is available then the limit will be the extent of the overdraft. Pre-paid Cash Cards ââ¬â As the name suggests the user will add credit to the card themselves, and will not exceed that amount. These are usually re-useable in that they can be ââ¬Ëtopped upââ¬â¢ however some cards, usually marketed as Gift Cards are not re-useable and once the credit has been spent they are disposed of. Store Cards ââ¬â These are similar in concept to the Credit Card model, in that the idea is to purchase something in store and be billed for it at the end of the month. These cards can be charged at a very high interest rate and can are limited in the places they can be used, sometimes as far as only the store brand that issued it. Advantages: You donââ¬â¢t have to carry cash. You can have your jobââ¬â¢s check directly deposited into the bank. You can buy what you want without having the money right then to buy the item as long as you do not go over the cardââ¬â¢s limit. In unexpected financial emergencies, cards can be used to pay for what you need. Wise use is beneficial to your credit report. Disadvantages: They encourage overspending You can get in too much debt, leading to filing bankruptcy. Cards often have extra or hidden fees and high interest rates. Using credit and debit cards puts you at higher risk of identity theft than using cash. Cards might be lost.

For this final research paper I chose to discuss racial discrimination and focus on content from an article entitled: The Inï ¬âuence of Ethnic Discrimination and Ethnic Identiï ¬ cation on African American Adolescentsââ¬â¢ School and Socioemotional Adjustment by Carol A. Gasland is a documentary film by Josh Fox. It all began when a natural gas company wishing to buy his land for use of drilling approached him on him, in Milanville, Pennsylvania. He was told that his home was sitting on a natural gas field called the Marcellus Shale. The company claimed the Marcellus Shale was ââ¬Å"the Saudi Arabia of natural gasâ⬠(Gasland). All of that led Josh to want to find out more about what exactly natural gas drilling meant for everyone around the country. This led him to the 2005 Energy Bill, which was pushed through by Dick Cheney, exempted the oil and natural gas industry from the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Air Act, and many other environmental laws. The information is interesting because Dick Cheney was CEO of Halliburton, the father of natural gas drilling. All of this information led Josh to the western America to see first hand the affects natural gas drilling that has been active in that area for at least a decade. Natural gas is extracted through a process called hydraulic fracturing, which drills a well and then pumps a mixture of water and fracking fluid. What most individual do not know is that Jamal is extraordinarily intelligent. Jamal also loves to read and write. Jamalââ¬â¢s lessons are learned in opulence with a man named William Forrester. Jamal does not only become a better writer, but he also learns the goodness to his integrity. Jamal shows his integrity to Forrester by not telling anyone about his new and long lost acquaintance. In the end, Jamalââ¬â¢s value laid in his integrity in many profound ways. William Forrester felt that people should just leave him alone and let his life pass him by. That was, until the day he met Jamal Wallace. Jamal teaches William the values of life that he is missing. Aside from Jamal wanting to learn more from Forrester, William will not allow it. Jamal teaches Forrester how to live his life to the fullest extent, and to never look back. After all of Jamalââ¬â¢s hard work, William finally came out of the comfort of his home, after so many years, and met civilization. Professor Robert Crawford is a bitter and malignant individual that is easily angered when he is being challenged. He wants to win every battle he comes across to ease his self-consciousness. Professor Crawford is an English teacher at Mailor-Callow, a school Jamal is chosen to attend. The professor is ascertained that Jamal is just attending because of his undoubted savvy to play basketball. What Professor Crawford does not know is that Jamal has an undeniable deftness of reading and writing, and because of that Crawford accuses Jamal of plagiarism. Jamal knows in his heart that he is an extraordinary writer, and he want others to know about it also. The stereotyping that Crawford does is despicable. He does not seem to understand why Jamal is so good in the things that he does. He does not care what others think because all he thinks about is oneself. In the end, even though Crawford does not give up, Jamal keeps his head up high and does not give up either. William Forrester, Jamal Wallace, and Professor Crawford adapted to the attributes of life, stereotyping, and integrity. This includes thirteen cousins and assorted aunts and uncles. Despite its size, the family is very tight knit. Members of the Portokalos family are strong believers in the Greek tradition and do everything together. The Greek culture is traditionally centered on the Greek Orthodox Church. These are very religious and cultural people. The tenants of their Greek Orthodox faith permeate all facets of their lives. They value strong family ties and follow the guidelines of a patriarchal family structure. With the father at the top of this family, the mother is the home maker. The father works while the mother stays at home cooking and cleaning to provide for the large family. Mixed marriages are not encouraged in the Greek culture. Greek girls are encouraged to choose equally strong cultured Greek men for their husband. A primary goal of Greek parents is to facilitate the marriage of their daughters to Greek men. According to Nixon (1980), ââ¬Å"The ethnic back ground of oneââ¬â¢s friends is an indicator of prospective mates from which one will chooseâ⬠(p 48). Greek families are very clannish. The extended family is always included along with the immediate family when there are Greek family gatherings. Each family gathering is thought to be an important factor in maintaining strong ties within the larger Greek community. It is also very common for ageing grandparents to live with their children. This is portrayed in My Big Fat Greek Wedding when Gusââ¬â¢ mother comes to live with the family. Ian comes from a small traditional American family. His extended family consists of only two cousins. His relatives are well to do and more sophisticated that those in Toulaââ¬â¢s family. It is difficult for Toula to explain her large family unit to Ian when they first meet. Ian understands the importance of Greek culture in Toulaââ¬â¢s life and accepts the large task of meeting and trying to assimilate with the large Portokalos family. On the part of Ianââ¬â¢s family, it takes some significant adjustment to accept the fact that Ian is marrying into such a strong willed Greek family. Foutoula ââ¬Å"Toulaâ⬠Portokalos is 30 years old, her father is Kostas ââ¬Å"Gusâ⬠Portokalos and her mother is Maria Portokalos. Her younger brother is Nick Portokalos and her older sister is Athena. Voula is Toulaââ¬â¢s aunt. Yiayia is Toulaââ¬â¢s grandmother, Gusââ¬â¢ mother. Cousins include Athena Portokalos, Nick Portokalos, Foci, Cousin Nikki, Angelo, Yianni, Cousin Jennie, Cousin Marianthi. Also part of the Portokalos family are Uncle Taki, Aunt Frieda, Aunt Lexy, Aunt Nota. Ian Miller is now part of the Portokalos family along with his mother and father, Harriet and Rodney Miller. Six years after Toula and Ian marry, their daughter Paris is introduced into the movie. They tell her she can marry anyone but they do require her to attend Greek school. Eriksonââ¬â¢s Developmental Stages According to Jarvis, ââ¬Å"Growth is continuous and change is perpetual throughout the life cycle (Jarvis, 2008). For Tula Portokalos, the battle between a strict Greek upbringing and the readiness to embark on oneââ¬â¢s own path haunts her daily. Like many who are experiencing the developmental tasks of a young adult, Tula is faced with the psychological conflict of intimacy versus isolation (Jarvis, 2008). When growing up, Tula always knew that she was different, but when she reached the age of 30 and was still not yet married, her family began to worry. As a young adult, her task was to find what everyone in her age group was looking for, and that was love. Ian, who is also facing the Early Adulthood stage of development, meets Tula at a restaurant where he sweeps her off her feet (Jarvis, 2008). The developmental task for choosing a mate is an even bigger task for Ian, who is faced with the loud and stubborn Greek family that believes Greeks are only meant to marry other Greeks. Ian, who is concerned with the psychological conflict of intimacy versus isolation, falls in love with Tula, where they begin to learn and cooperate with in-laws and a new martial relationship (Jarvis, 2008). Gus, Tulaââ¬â¢s father, who is not too fond of Greeks marrying outside the Greek culture, believes only in two things: that non-Greeks should be taught how to be Greek, and that Windex cures everything. The developmental task and psychological conflict that Mr. Gus faces is the resolution of generativity versus stagnation (Jarvis, 2008). Tulaââ¬â¢s father is concerned with the tasks of Middle Adulthood. Gus must accept Tulaââ¬â¢s decision of marriage and learn to cope with an empty nest at home or he may risk the negative outcomes of stagnation and sorrow (Jarvis, 2008). Maria, Tulaââ¬â¢s mother, is very understanding and explains to Tula that although man is the head of household, the woman is the neck and can turn the head in any direction she wants too. Maria is also in the development stage of Middle Adulthood (Jarvis, 2008). Her tasks include accepting and relating to her spouse and developing leisure activities such as cooking and gasping (Jarvis, 2008). Tulaââ¬â¢s sister Athena represents the ideal Greek woman. She married a Greek man, had Greek babies, and fed everyone in the Greek family. Athenaââ¬â¢s stage of development is Early Adulthood. At this stage, she was focused to learn the roles of parenting. Athenaââ¬â¢s focus as a young adult was primarily based on setting up oneââ¬â¢s own household and raising a family (Jarvis 2008). Another young adult in this crazy Greek family is Tulaââ¬â¢s brother Nick. Nickââ¬â¢s task as a young adult is focused on forming a meaningful philosophy about life (Jarvis, 2008). He tells Tula not to let the past dictate who she is, but to let it be a part of who she will become. This philosophy is developed in Early Adulthood and governs how people make decisions about life and curtain morals. Coping Resources-Problem Solving and Stressors The Portokalos family seems to cope with stress quite well. When dealing with a new situation or stress in the family, the coping mechanisms that are involved include eating, cooking, and drinking. In an event where stress may play a role, the whole family comes together and works to fix the problem. This family consists of a strong support system that encourages individuals to express their emotions, resulting in loud and over exaggerated behavior. The Greeks hold nothing back, saying and expressing exactly what is on their minds. For Ian, coping with stress is handled quite differently. To adapt to the Greek standards, Ian made the decision to be baptized in the Orthodox Church. His ability to cope to the stressful demands of the Portokalos family eventually pays off when he is finally accepted as one of their own. The scholarly journal, ââ¬Å"Are Greek-Americans Likely to Seek Psychotherapyâ⬠, addresses the skepticism that Greek-Americans have in seeking care for stress (Bagourdl, 2010). Although the resources are available to these immigrants, the unwillingness to seek help for this particular issue is uniform though out this culture. Eleni Bagourdl, the author of the journal, explains that although Greek-Americans do not completely reject the idea, the majority feel a uniform disinterest in seeking professional psychological help (Bagourdl, 2010). That when dealing with mental issues such as stress or conflicting problems, the Greek-American community look to family and friends for comfort and relief (Bagourdl, 2010). An individualââ¬â¢s willingness to seek professional help is greatly influenced by oneââ¬â¢s culture (Bagourdl, 2010). According to the journal, immigrants rarely seek psychotherapy, but as a result therapists are becoming more interested in minority issues and coping strategies that are culturally orientated (Bagourdl, 2010). Integrity Process The Portokalos are a Greek family who consist of a combination of Greeks who immigrated to America and their children, who were born in America. They practice familism which, according to Rodriguez Mira, Paez, and Mira (2007), has ââ¬Å"three dimensions: importance of family, family support, and family conflict with acculturationâ⬠(p 61). Familism places the familyââ¬â¢s needs above the individuals. In this system, the patriarch of the family, Kostas Gus Portokalos, is in charge. He migrated to America when he was a young boy, yet he did not acculturate to the American way of life and has strict adherence to his heritage consistency and is very ââ¬Å"Old Countryâ⬠. He holds an ethnocentrism view about Greek culture that is recurrent throughout the film. An example used multiple times throughout the film is his belief that every word has its root in the Greek language. Toula is at a crossroads in her life because she is thirty years old and single. She was born and raised in America, and has been acculturated to the American way of life, but is still expected to live by her fatherââ¬â¢s Greek way of life. She plays a subservient role in her family due to familism, but she also yearns to be able to do what she wants to do, and doesnââ¬â¢t want to live a prearranged life. The most glaring example of her heritage inconsistency is when she begins to date a man who is not Greek. This is heartbreaking to her father because he believes nice Greek girls are supposed to do three things in life. According to Toula, they are ââ¬Å"marry Greek boys, make Greek babies, and feed everyone until the day we dieâ⬠(Zwick, 2002). This is a direct conflict of acculturation between the two. Toulaââ¬â¢s mother, Maria, is more understanding of her situation than her father. She also wants Toula to marry a Greek man, but she understands that things are different in America and that love knows no bounds. She uses her wisdom to comfort both Toula, who is having a hard time dealing with breaking her fatherââ¬â¢s heart, and Gus, whose heart is broken because her daughter is breaking away from tradition by marrying a non-Greek. She practices both heritage consistency and inconsistency throughout the story. The Portokalos are practicing Greek Orthodox. They are very religious, as this was evidenced a few times in the movie. The first time was when Toula introduced the family to Ian at the Greek Orthodox Easter celebration. The other major time this was evidenced when Ian had to convert to Greek Orthodox in order to marry Toula. This was very important to Gus because it showed that Ian was attempting to assimilate into their family, and the Greek culture. Health Processes The Portokalos family interacts with each other on a daily basis. Because of this, they would be able to notice if one of them were to be in bad health, and could persuade them to go see their medical provider. According to Arends-Toth and Van de Vijver (2008), ââ¬Å"the family can promote health-protective behaviors as family networks aid people in recognizing symptoms and seeking medical care in case of a suspected illnessâ⬠(p 470). When the Portokalos extended family gets together, it centers around food. This is most evidenced when Toula is bringing Ian and his parents over to meet her parent. When they show up, the entire family is out in the front yard, with Gus roasting a lamb. When they go inside the house, food is sitting on every table. They do not eat in moderation, and every meal that the Portokalos are shown eating appears to be a feast. Their eating habits are a risk factor that could lead to obesity and health problems associated with obesity. The Portokalos also like to drink Ouzo, a popular liquor from Greece. Whenever there is a celebration, they breakout bottles of it and drink it throughout the celebration. They often drink this liquor in excess during the celebration. This abuse of alcohol could have very serious consequences to their health. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD)ââ¬âand particularly cirrhosisââ¬âhas long been one of the most prevalent and devastating conditions caused by alcohol consumption and is one of the leading causes of alcohol-related death (Mandrekar and Szabo 2010 p. 270). The Portokalos do not appear to be daily abusers of alcohol, however their reckless attitude towards drinking at celebrations, which appear to be often, could cause significant harm to their bodies. Family System Strengths The Greek family at the center of My Big Fat Greek Wedding is very influenced by their traditional heritage and values. While assessing the characteristics of their family system that promote health and stability, it is apparent that the family is grounded in tradition. The effect that this has is that there is no question what the family membersââ¬â¢ roles and expectations are. This lack of confusion about what is expected offers a stable foundation for growth and discovery. Another quality that is displayed in this familyââ¬â¢s system that is notable is the direct communication between family members. This quality comes across as a bit abrasive at first glance; however, upon considering the net effect of this quality, it is obviously better than lack of communication. The way that the Portakalos family is structured, each family member knows where they stand in relation to the other family members. Having such a firm grasp on your place in the world and where you come from can be quite an asset in forming oneââ¬â¢s own identity. The consistent set of values combined with knowing your place in the family fosters a well rounded outlook that allows Toula to be aware of the impact of breaking tradition while having the courage to stand by her decision to marry outside of her Greek culture. The healthy dynamic that this family practices comes full circle when in the end when Toulaââ¬â¢s family changes their tone, and become more supportive of Toulaââ¬â¢s marriage to Ian. Toulaââ¬â¢s family, even her headstrong father, is flexible enough to reassess their values and become open to, and even supportive of changes in tradition. Another aspect of this families practices that could be described as healthy is the way that the family listens to Gus rant and rave about all things Greek, even bending the truth a bit to convey his deep seeded pride in his native culture. They display tolerance by allowing Gus to explain how everything has Greek origin, while maintaining a more realistic sense of things that actually do have Greek origins, show that there is a balance that this family displays between things that warrant a confrontation and allowing a family member to be who they are. This shows that the Portakalosââ¬â¢ style of communication is healthy and stable. Toulaââ¬â¢s family has a healthy family system in place in order to promote a healthy family structure. As stated by Barnhill (2001), ââ¬Å"The themes of a healthy family include positive management of identity processes, change, information processing and role structureâ⬠(p 33). Toulaââ¬â¢s family has a system in place that guides the family to an overall healthy environment. In conclusion, the family in My Big Fat Greek Wedding illustrates many of the components that make up a healthy and stable family. Their family structure is traditional to their culture. As with most families we see developmental stages matching their age perfectly as well as some late bloomers. Coping resources, as well as integrity fall into a wide range, from appropriate to less than appropriate. Health values seem to get trampled by tradition, and their family system seems to bring all of these components together to make up a typical happy family.
